Research on cyber security by the Cyber-Defence Campus

The Cyber Security team of the Cyber-Defence Campus is dedicated to promoting innovative research and solutions to secure the digital landscape of today and tomorrow. The team combines in-depth expertise on challenges in various areas of cyber security, thus contributing to national resilience against evolving cyber threats.

The research conducted by the teams is a long-term investment in the development of the fundamental expertise and scientific and technical skills that are crucial for the field of cyber defence. CYD Campus strives to meet the highest international standards and create a world-class research environment that not only offers extensive resources to a diverse range of researchers, but also serves as a key hub for the advancement of cyber talent in Switzerland.

The Cyber Security team of the Cyber-Defence Campus contributes to ensuring that the technologies and systems procured by armasuisse provide the required level of security, that their security can be efficiently verified using the latest methods, and that the opportunities and risks of current and future technologies are understood and taken into account. The team also provides information about new methods and security solutions with the aim of making new capabilities and technological innovations available to the users in a timely manner (e.g. in the form of demonstrators). As part of the activities for the Cyber-Defence Campus, the team is also working to increase the security and resilience of cyber systems that are highly relevant to Switzerland, and contributes to setting the agenda and promoting cyber talent.

To provide this service, in-depth expertise and good networking in the various fields of cyber security are essential. The greatest challenge here is knowledge of technologies that are still at an early stage of development (e.g. quantum technologies), are subject to very rapid development cycles (e.g. artificial intelligence) or have so far received little attention in terms of their cybersecurity (e.g. operational technologies OT).

The research programme led by the Cyber Security Team is of central importance in meeting these challenges. It enables new technologies to be examined at an early stage, a partner network to be maintained, topics to be placed in it and the associated research questions to be answered efficiently.

The research programme focuses on various topics that are generally based on longer-term visions. These include, in particular, the automation of attack and defence in cyberspace, quantum-safe cryptographic systems, highly secure wide-area networks (WAN) and mobile end devices, as well as highly secure systems for electronic identities that provide optimal protection of privacy. Other topics that are expected to remain highly relevant for several years are the security of operational technologies (e.g. building automation or smart buildings) and technologies for space (satellites and applications running on them) and transport systems (road, rail and aviation). Finally, the team is also addressing the question of how to optimise the human factor in the sense of a human ‹firewall› and is working on novel solutions to previously unsolved problems in electronic voting.
